Day Case Unit

Day case unit with vascular imaging suite, York

A state-of-the-art, fast-track building, accommodating a twin operating theatre suite and catheterisation laboratories for cardiac and vascular investigation, has been built at York Hospital by ModuleCo.

The requirement.
York Hospital Services NHS Trust required a new day case unit to treat patients needing x-ray investigations and procedures for vascular conditions such as blood vessel blockages and heart conditions.

The solution.

ModuleCo used off-site construction to provide a two-storey modular building, which includes two catheterisation laboratories, a 13-bed recovery unit and two operating theatre suites. The off-site construction of modular units meant that the building was complete in just 20 weeks.

ModuleCo provided a full turnkey service; including liasing with equipment supplier GE Medical Systems (Innova 4100 & 2000) and the specialist pre-installation of dedicated shielding for the interventional suites. As the laboratories are used for imaging and interventional procedures, they were designed and built to operating theatre standards. The operating theatres are positioned on the first floor and are linked into an existing theatre.

  The benefits.
Off-site advantages include:
  • Short construction programme
  • The building was positioned in the car-park, adjacent to the main hospital
  • Minimum disruption to the main hospital
  • Quality internal finishes for easy maintenance.

The result.
The new day case unit helps the Trust to reduce the time patients spend in the hospital and drive down waiting lists.

The Trust’s directorate manager of radiology services, Nigel Marsh, said:“We are delighted with our new facilities. We have expanded our capacity to carry out cardiac and vascular investigations to meet the increasing demand”.
